Functional Capacity Evaluation

A Functional Capacity Evaluation is a full body comprehensive medical test often ordered by a physician used to measure an employee’s functional capacity and assist in injury management, whether the injury was sustained while at work or existed previously. The FCE test may be used alone to document existing impairments or it may be used in combination with the Post-Offer Comprehensive test as a comparison against original, baseline data.

The full test often takes around 2-3 hours to perform not including the paperwork beforehand. This test becomes a very standard when it involves legal cases and claims for disability. Components of the FCE involve:

  • Patient information
  • Medical history
  • Musculoskeletal evaluation
  • Cardio vascular assessment
  • Dynamic lifts
  • Job specific testing

The FCE was designed to be used as a way to prove consistency, validity of performance and to create realistic, objective rehabilitation goals, return to work recommendations, or work conditioning programs to capitalize on injury management procedures. This information is invaluable to objectively move the patient through the system in a fair and timely manner.
